Thinking about characters

I'm going to have an old lady and a young man (early 20s) for my character...

I've been thinking of different situations and relationships.  They are either grandma and grandson, mugger and muggee, or just total strangers having a chance encounter.
Some places i've found that are best for drawing characters are The Bridges shopping centre, coffee shops, and people hanging arounnd Monument in Newcastle.  There is a cafe in Monument Mall that overlooks a bench and drawing people as they wait there for people is fascinating.  Some people will sit for HOURS.  I think a lot of them just want to be by themselves.  Old people drink tea, sit around and talk for a long time.  Everyone else seems like they need to be somewhere, and they're just sitting down for a couple of minutes before dashing off to the next thing.
